OBDII ERROR CODES - WHAT NOW?

Your "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light came on. Now what? The car is still running? Is it serious?
We are trying to develop lists that can help folks out there. Here's a favorite of mine. Your vehicle might vary, so always check with your vehicles service manual before acting upon this information.

CODE READER
You can buy an OBD II Code  reader unit here or from your local parts store. The best value we have seen is this one from Harbor Freight Tools.

UNIVERSAL CODE READER
UNIVERSAL CODE READER
Pin point problems the way mechanics do. Easy to use. Simply plug the reader into the vehicle's test connector and your car's on board computer will tell the code reader what ails it. Includes instruction manual. Fits 1996 and newer vehicles with generic OBDII connector.
ITEM 46030-0VGA$49.99 (Sometimes on sale for $39.99)

Note:
Even if you don't do your own repairs, owning a reader is a great idea - it can help you learn the "quality" of your chosen repair department. Knowing what your car's computer knows is always a good idea. The code scanner I use is an Actron CP9125. Some Autoparts store (Autozone & Oreilly) offer FREE
code reading too!

WARNING Working on automobiles can injure or kill you.  We bear no responsibility if you or anyone else gets hurt (physically or monetarily) following any advice or information offered here or any other page we host. We are just trying to help out.

GOT THE CODES - NOW WHAT?
So you read a set of codes from your car. Meaningless letters and numbers! What do they mean? Here's some information - we just thought it would be useful to have them all in one place. Don't know what EGR and ECM, etc. mean? Look Here

Remember - just because a code is set, does NOT always mean that the device it points to is bad! Faulty wiring (wires broken, shorted or burned) can cause the same effect and so can a bad computer box (ecm Electronic Control Module)  It is a shame, but a perfectly working car can be brought to a halt with a "dead" engine by a simple fuse in a box somewhere. (Makes you long for the good old days - one vacuum line and one wire to the distributor and coil - sigh).

So what fails on cars these days?  Well, Oxygen Sensors wear out and need replacing or the emissions and economy go down the tubes. The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve) clog up with carbon and stop working - more emission NOX problems. By sending some of the exhaust gases back into the intake, combustion temperatures are lowered to reduce oxides of Nitrogen NOX - Smog in other words.
Various other sensors like MAP sensors in the intake air, TPS Throttle Position Sensors, Knock Sensors, cam sensors - they can all go on the fritz.  EGRs are my favorite as you get to hit them with a hammer to clean them.

OBDII Shorthand List

AFC - Air Flow Control

ALDL - Assembly Line Diagnostic Link. Former name for GM (only) Data Link Connector, the connector socket into which the scan tool plug is inserted; sometimes used to refer to any pre-OBDII computer signals. You access these usually by shorting 2 terminals on a diagnostic connector which is sometimes inside the car, sometimes under the hood.
CAN - Controller Area Network
CARB - California Air Resources Board
CFI - Central Fuel Injection (a.k.a. Throttle Body Fuel Injection TBI)
CFI - Continuous Fuel Injection

ECT - Engine Coolant Temperature
EEC - Electronic Engine Control
EEPROM or E2PROM - Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory- Chips in other words.
EFI - Electronic Fuel Injection A pump pressurizes the fuel onto tiny 12V valves (injectors) which squirt gas into the cylinders - replaced the carburettor
EGR -  Exhaust Gas Recirculation  Robs you of horsepower, but does clean up the air! Blockages on this valve are common causes of emission failures.

HC - Hydrocarbons
HEI - High Energy Ignition - Usually built into the distributor.
HO2S - Heated Oxygen Sensor - Another high failure component. 3 years is about it on these. O2 Sensors fail to a point then the computer sets a code $80 each. You may have 4 of them in your car! (the dreaded Dodge Intrepid!)
IAT - Intake Air Temperature
ISO 9141 - International Standards Organization OBDII communication mode, used by Chrysler and most foreign cars. One of three hardware layers defined by OBDII
